- BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMS:
- ==============================
-
- These programs represents an accurate simulation of the Ancient Chinese
- oracle known as the I CHING, or Book of Changes. Such an oracle has been
- used in the past to foretell the future or to analyse the present.
-
- Devotees of the I Ching include or have included Bob Reid (current
- chairman of British Rail), Carl Jung (the psychoanalytical guru), Confucius
- (the chinese philosopher), Leibnitz (the mathematician) and Hermann Hesse
- (the novelist).
-
- As well as simulating the oracle the programs provides a distillation of
- scholarship relating to the I Ching.
-
- There are two versions of the program on disk - one for DOS (ICHING.EXE) and
- one for Windows 3 (WINCHING.EXE).
-
- The translation of the text of the Oracle is a sythesis of the various
- published versions, hopefully eliminating the misunderstandings and
- inaccuracies of some translations.
-
- ENVIRONMENT REQUIRED:
- =====================
-
- ICHING.EXE
-
- The DOS version will work with any kind of display, from Monochrome
- text to VGA as it uses only the ASCII character set in text mode.
-
- Due to the way that the program is structured, with all the text stored
- externally, it will run in 128K and requires about 250K of disk space.
-
- Version 2.11 of DOS or above is necessary.
-
- Printouts can be produced on any Epson or IBM compatible printer.
-
- WINCHING.EXE
-
- The Windows 3 version will run on any computer that can run Windows 3 and
- can produce printouts on any installed printers.
-
- ELEMENTS IN THE PROGRAMS:
- =========================
-
- Each program presents a menu with a number of options.
-
- There are a number of short essays available from the menu - covering a quick
- Background, a History lesson, a summary of the underlying Philosophy, an
- explanation of the Symbolism and a guide to the Interpretation of the oracle.
-
- Another option allows the user to put a question to the oracle, which will then
- answer with up to 4 screens of text. The answer can be printed or written to a
- text file with a name of the users choice.
-
- The final option allows the user to view any of the 64 symbolic hexagrams used
- by the oracle.
-
- In addition to the programs is this document, together with a text file
- showing a sample consultation of the oracle.
-
- There are three sub-directories containing text used by the program:
-
- TEXT containing 5 lessons on I-Ching subjects, plus a help file for the Windows
- Version.
-
- TEXTH which gives explanations of the 64 hexagrams.
-
- TEXTL which contains 64 sub-texts which relate to individual lines of the
- hexagrams.
-
- STARTING THE PROGRAM:
- =====================
-
- DOS VERSION: At the DOS prompt, type in ICHING and press enter!
-
- WINDOWS VERSION: You can either add a program item, or load WINCHING.EXE
- from the program manager.

-
-
- TO INSTALL, COPY OR REMOVE THE PROGRAM
- ======================================
-
- To install the program, insert the diskette into drive a: or drive b:.
-
- Make this drive current by typing a: or b:. Then type ICINST s d (where
- s is the source drive, for example a: or b: and d is the target drive,
- for example c: or d:).
-
- After installation, if you do not need the windows version, then you can
- delete WINCHING.EXE & VBRUN100.DLL from your hard disk. If you do not need
- the DOS version, then you can delete iching.exe.
-
- To copy the program, execute the following steps. In the example we are
- copying from the diskette drive A: to the Hard Disk C:, but on a twin
- floppy machine you can copy from A: to B: or any other combination.
-
- 1. Change the current drive to the target drive by typing:
-
- C:
-
- 2. Create a directory on the target drive called ICHING:
-
- MD ICHING
-
- 3. Change the current directory:
-
- CD ICHING
-
- 4. Type the following DOS command:
-
- XCOPY A: C: /S
-
- If you wish to remove the program from your hard disk, type in ICREMOVE
- and the programs and files will be deleted.
-
- Finally, I would be interested to hear of your experiences with the program.
- It has an uncanny knack of finding correct or appropriate answers.
-
- Good Luck and welcome to the fascinating world of Ancient China.
